Southern Ocean plankton images - JGOFS-AESOPS
The collection aims to showcase the range of Southern Ocean diatom species that survive vertical transport through the water column across the Antarctic Polar Front, either as colonies, aggregates or pellet fragments. The collection includes species across the Polar Front at approx. 1000m depth, as well as images of samples from 2000m, 3000m and the sediment surface (core tops), where available. All samples imaged in the collection are from the JGOFS-AESOPS sediment trap array deployed across the Antarctic Polar Front in 1996 (Honjo et al. 2000). Sample treatment: Samples collected in 1996 were fixed in formalin (Honjo et al. 2000). Split aliquots were obtained for taxonomy analysis and SEM imaging. For improved imaging, samples were treated with H2O2 to remove organic matter (Grigorov et al., submitted), and subsamples precipitated on aluminium stubs and coated prior to Scanning Electron Microscope imaging.
